Cleanse twice a day
Regardless of your skin type, cleansing twice a day is always a great place to start. By using the right facial cleanser, you can wash away excess oil and dirt from your skin’s surface, without stripping your skin of its essential oils. Avoid over-washing, as this causes your skin to create even more oils to make up for the ones it lost.
When looking for the best cleanser for oily skin, we recommend using a clay facial cleanser. We love the Pure Clay Eucalyptus Purifying Cream Face Wash, which uses a foaming cream formula that perfectly cleanses and purifies the skin, whilst removing impurities and excess oils. The eucalyptus helps to soothe and mattify the skin, adding a refreshing finish. To use, squeeze a small amount of cleanser into your hands, add water, then watch the cleanser transform from clay to foam. Gently massage the cleanser onto your skin, using circular motions and avoiding your eye contours. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and gently pat dry with a towel.
Let’s not forget to mention micellar water—another type of facial cleaner that’s growing in popularity in the beauty sector. Micellar water is powered by tiny micelles—oil molecules—that act like a magnet to lift dirt and oil out of the skin (without the need for rinsing or rubbing).
Add a face mask to your routine regularly
Can’t make it to the day spa? Bring that luxurious treatment home by using a face mask a few times each week. With so many options available, you’ll be sure to find a mask that addresses your skin’s specific needs. A facial cleanser alone isn’t always enough to tackle the daily build-up of dirt, makeup, oils and other nasties. As we mentioned above, cleansers and masks formulated with clay are some of the best skin care products for oily skin. The Pure Clay Detoxifying Charcoal Mask has a unique combination of three pure clays and is enriched with black charcoal, which helps to draw out impurities and blackheads. The creamy texture of this clay mask detoxifies the skin’s surface and works deep into the pores, leaving your skin looking bright and fresh! To use, apply an even layer to clean, dry skin—avoiding the eyes and lips. Leave the face mask on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with warm water.
Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise
You might be questioning why you’d need to apply moisturiser to oily skin, but we promise you, don’t skip this step. Here’s why: over-washing your face leads to stripping it of essential oils, which then leads to your skin producing more oil to make up for what it’s lost. This is where moisturiser plays a key part. In order to find the best moisturiser for oily skin, look for a lightweight, oil-free formula with a matte finish. Hyaluronic acid is our favourite hydrating ingredient that will boost your skin, without weighing it down or blocking pores. We love the Revitalift Filler Hyaluronic Acid Revolumising Day Cream. Apply the moisturiser after your shower or when your face is still warm and damp, as this is the best time to moisturise.
Protect yourself from the sun
Sun protection is an essential part of any skin care routine. Australians are well versed in applying sunscreen when heading outdoors on a hike or for a day at the beach—and we also know the risks of sun damage. This is why it’s just as imperative to wear sunscreen everyday in day-to-day life, whether you’re simply walking to the store or planning to sit behind a desk all day. In the morning, make sure to use a moisturiser formulated with broad-spectrum sunscreen, as this will help to protect the skin from sun damage. If you have oily skin, look for a non-comedogenic formula—one that won’t clog pores. Two of our favourite picks with SPF are the Revitalift Classic Day Cream SPF15 and the Revitalift Laser X3 SPF15 Day Cream.
Get makeup free before bed
Don’t forget to remove your makeup before letting your head hit the pillow at night. When you sleep, your makeup mixes with oil and dirt on the surface of your skin, which can result in blocked pores, breakouts and blackheads. Do you want to know one of our best late-night tips for an effective skincare routine for oily skin? When your full skin care routine seems like too much effort, we recommend still making sure to remove your makeup. On those days, make it fool proof and keep a pack of makeup-removing wipes, next to your bed for easy access.
Do your makeup - the right way!
When it comes to managing oily skin, your skin care routine is only half the battle. If you wear makeup, your products and application process both matter as well! By using specialised products and techniques to help control excess oil, you can bid farewell to that midday shine.
- Use primer. Always apply primer before you pick up the foundation or concealer. Primer acts as a base for foundation, helping it to stay in place longer. It also creates a smooth canvas for foundation application.
- Apply foundation. When you have oily skin, use a long-wear foundation with a matte finish, like the 24HR Matte Setter Primer. For seamless coverage, try applying your foundation with a buffing brush or makeup sponge. Put a small amount of foundation onto the sponge, then use dabbing and rolling motions to blend it onto your skin.
- Dust on a face powder. To avoid any sweaty or unflattering makeup situations, set liquid foundation and concealer with a face powder
- Carry blotting papers in your purse. If you find that your skin still gets shiny during the day, dab a blotting paper on your face to help soak up any excess oil in a pinch.
